Common Questions About Johnstown Castle

Everything you need to know about exploring our castle grounds, gardens, and lake walks in Wexford

Johnstown Castle grounds with lake and historic estate

The main lake walk takes about 45 minutes to an hour at a leisurely pace. If you want to explore the full estate including the gardens and all the pathways, plan for 2 to 2.5 hours. We've got routes for everyone—quick 30-minute walks or longer 3-hour explorations depending on your interest and fitness level.

Absolutely. Most of the main pathways are flat and well-maintained, making them pushchair-friendly. The lake walk in particular is accessible and scenic for families with younger children. Some of the garden trails are narrower, so you might need to leave the pushchair behind for those, but you'll find plenty of shaded spots to rest along the way.

Spring (April–May) brings the gardens to life with blooming flowers and fresh greenery. Summer's great for longer days and warm walks, though it can get busy. Autumn offers stunning colours and crisp air—perfect for photography. Winter is quieter and moody, ideal if you prefer peaceful walks. Really, each season has its own charm here.

You can do both. Self-guided walks are perfect if you just want to explore at your own pace with a map. We also offer guided estate tours where you'll learn about the landscape history, architecture, and stories behind the grounds—really brings the place to life. Groups can book tailored experiences focusing on what interests them most.

Comfortable walking shoes are really all you need. The paths are well-kept, but since we're in Wexford, weather can change quickly, so bring a light jacket or waterproof. Water and snacks are handy, especially if you're doing a longer walk. In summer, sunscreen and a hat help, and binoculars are brilliant for spotting wildlife around the lake.

Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome—they love the estate as much as you will. Yes, there are toilet facilities and a café where you can grab a coffee or light lunch. It's worth checking opening times beforehand as these can vary seasonally. Picnicking is also encouraged if you prefer to bring your own.
